Peasant Militias - peasant troops rounded up by the lords of their lands and armed with rudimentary weapons like farming implements, crude spears and bows. They have little or no training what so ever and are poorly armored, if at all and are ill-suited for most combat. Perhaps their only merit is that they will fight for next to nothing.

Light Infantry - infantry that is lightly armed and armored, enabling them to move and strike quickly. Suitable as scouts or as precursory units to a larger strike force. While they are usually not the most experienced, they can fight better than peasants and in some situations out fight heavier infantry as well.

Heavy Infantry - infantry that is well armed and armored, making them the back bone of most armies. They are usually well-drilled and somewhat experienced in combat. Suitable as vanguard units, capable of besting most other forms of infantry in almost all situations, though somewhat slow and vulnerable to cavalry.

Shock Infantry - infantry that is armed to the teeth and possesses a moderate amount of armor, enabling them to fight toe-to-toe with ease and still remain mobile. They are trained, disciplined and more often than not experienced soldiers. They only break under the most adverse situations, and as the name implies are ideal in a shock trooper role.

Light Cavalry - little more than mounted light infantry. These riders are quick, making them excellent scouts, but are somewhat undependable in a stand-up fight. Best used for running down fleeing units or harassing enemy formations.

Heavy Cavalry - the equivalent of mounted heavy infantry. They are better armored than their light cavalry counterparts, but as a result are slower as well. Best used for charging and attempting to break through enemy formations, though they are hard to turn in the heat of battle.

Bowmen - light infantry armed with bows and arrows. They are better trained than peasants with their implements of war, and are easily more accurate at longer ranges. They are armed for close encounters, but aren't exactly what one would consider swordsmen, and thus are more likely to flee in pitched hand-to-hand combat than stand and fight.

Crossbowmen - infantry armed with crossbows, rather than bows. While possessing in most cases lesser training than a regular bowman, their weapons make up for it. They shoot straighter and with greater force, enabling them to pierce heavier, and heavier armor. However, for the apparent merits of these weapons, they possess one major drawback, their rate of fire is significantly less than a regular bowman's, making them extremely vulnerable between salvos.
